Hello, I am Brenda Jones the County Councillor for Lakenham and Tuckswood. I live just outside Norwich with my husband, two dogs and some rescue chickens. I volunteer at Sewell Barn Theatre where I help with the lighting and the costumes. I enjoy cooking, making quilts, knitting and gardening. I read too many books!
I worked as a mental health nurse for over 30 years, during that time I taught at the School of Nursing at UEA and was the Research manager at the Mental Health Trust.
I grew up in a single parent household, failed my eleven plus and lived on a couple of ’problem’ council estates. I understand the problems that people face when they have little money, few opportunities and are judged by their home circumstances and a need for free school meals.
I was fortunate to be able to study while I worked and obtained a BSc from the Open University and an MA in Ethics. I believe that a good education should be the right of every child and adult and not the preserve of the wealthy and privileged.
I am the member champion for Physical Disability and Sensory Impairment and am a Trustee of Vision Norfolk. I am a member of the Norfolk Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee, the People and Community Select Committee and the Community Education Steering Group.
I am the Labour Spokesperson for Adult Social Care and Social Inclusion.
Over the past four years I have learned so much about the County Council and have never been afraid to speak up for the people of Lakenham and the wider County.
